At the age of 35 years old, our Pastor Elder Jim H. Eddings and First Lady Wynonia Jean Eddings founded the New Greater Hope COGIC in 1968. In the family room of his home in Carson, California, the Pastor and wife, his five children and about five faithful members established the spiritual foundation upon which New Greater Hope still stands.  Within nine months, the Pastor bought the property at 2615 W. Compton Blvd in Compton, California and NGH Church began to grow.

Sunday mornings at NGH were filled with anointed songs of praise and the preached word. “It was Holiness or Hell.” Through faith, frequent revivals, shut-in’s, dedication to fasting and prayer, and neighborhood outreach, the Lord began to bless and strengthen the church. Many fundraisers-- bake sale’s, bar-b-ques, rummage sales, raffles—helped support New Greater Hope since the “…laborers are few.”  There were many years of struggle financially. The Lord gave the Pastor and wife the strength and faith to fight and remain strong - often sacrificing their finances to pay the mortgage.

Pastor Eddings never doubted the Lord’s promises to “increase our territory”, (I Chronicles 4:9-10).  In December 1986, God blessed Pastor Jim Eddings, and his congregation to move into our beautiful edifice at 1216 S. Wilmington Ave., Compton, California. By God’s grace, New Greater Hope has become stronger with each new generation of its members and has been greatly blessed through each auxiliary of the church.

Approaching his fiftieth year as pastor, Elder Eddings had visions of further growth and expansion of the property of New Greater Hope Church. He admonished the members to continue to pursue his vision and the work of the ministry.

Although, our founder, Pastor Jim Henry Eddings, Jr. departed this life on January 16, 2018, the New Greater Hope congregation continue to pursue and fulfill the same mission as Christ--preaching the gospel, seeking to save those that are lost and welcome them into the body of Christ. From June 2019, Elder Kenyun Davis faithfully served as Pastor of New Greater Church of God in Christ until the Lord guided him to move on to new endeavors in July 2024. On February 18, 2025, Pastor Charles Smith II was elected as the new Pastor. As we embark on this new chapter, we wholeheartedly support Pastor and First Lady Smith as they continue to build upon the legacy, uphold the vision, and advance the ministry forward.
